We recently posted on our Facebook page about the lack of applicants for our Transformation Scholarship. This scholarship fund was created with the goal of assisting anyone in need with educational expenses. The Transformation Scholarship is a $1000 scholarship. Recipients must meet the following qualifications –
– Live in Lockport Township or Lockport Township High School District.
– Attend a not-for-profit school or educational program such as adult education, college or university, junior or community college, trade school or technical/vocational training program.
– Preference will be given to Lockport Resource Center volunteers, clients and their families.
– Submit an essay explaining how this scholarship will help Transform you as a person and reflect our values of People Helping People and Pass It On.
– Meet for an interview with the Scholarship Committee.
The Transformation Scholarship was named in reference to breaking the cycle of poverty and limited access to education. On average, it takes up to 10 years of ‘nothing going wrong’ in order for someone to ‘get ahead’ in today’s world. The Transformation Scholarship is meant to focus on helping with the biggest step, education or training. The Scholarship Committee, headed by Christopher “Kit” Lindblom, is focused on students where we can help ‘change the story’. “We’re looking to make a difference in the shorter term,” he said, “an opportunity to make a change,”
One of the focus areas would be a Nursing Assistant program or a technical program that would allow a student to potentially have a chance at a better job after a semester or two. Past recipients have used funds for Junior College, Culinary Arts and a Student Enrichment Program. The Committee is open to considering non-traditional students and we encourage applications from those who may be the first in their family to attend school, students who did not complete high school, and those experiencing life transitions.
